You should switch to winter tires when the temperature drops below 7 degrees.
It's a good idea to be a bit ahead when it comes to switching from summer tires to winter tires, as the weather and temperature suddenly can change quickly. You might wake up one day to icy roads, and it might be too late to switch to winter tires when you're in a hurry to get to work.
Make sure you're early and change your summer tires for a pair of winter tires before the temperature gets too low.
There are three types of tires: winter tires, summer tires and all-season tires. The different types of tires are designed to be used in different conditions and to give you the best safety on the road.
Winter tires are designed to be used in cold temperatures and wintry conditions. They have a deeper tread pattern and grooves for better grip when there is snow or ice. They're also made from a more flexible rubber compound that can flex better in low temperatures.
Summer tires are designed to be used in warmer weather. The tread pattern on these is simpler and is designed for dry and wet roads. In addition, they are made of a harder rubber compound that works well at high temperatures.
All-season tires are a mix between winter and summer tires. They are designed to work in both winter and summer weather, but they don't perform any better than the specialized summer and winter tires. All-season tires are best used in places where there aren't huge temperature changes between summer and winter.
A good rule of thumb when it comes to winter tires is that they can last a maximum of 5 seasons when in use. If they're not in use, they can be a maximum of 10 years old. However, there is no legislation in this area.
Winter tires can actually get too old and the reason is that they are made from a special rubber compound consisting of natural rubber and silica, which provides good performance in winter conditions. However, this rubber compound will also degrade over time, which is why your winter tires actually deteriorate the longer they are in use.
You can find the age of your winter tires by looking at the DOT code on the wheel. There will be four numbers, the first two of which tell you which week the winter tire was produced in and the last two numbers tell you the year. If it says 4224, it means that the winter tire was produced in week 42 of the year 2024.
You don't necessarily need to have rims for both your summer and winter tires. If you like your rims, you can have the summer tires removed from the rim and have winter tires put on the same rims at the workshop instead. However, this can be relatively expensive. It is therefore recommended that you have two sets of rims and tires (one set for summer and one set for winter).
Many people choose to have alloy wheels on their summer tires and steel rims on their winter tires. Steel rims are heavier than alloy rims, which can be an advantage during the winter period when you need to ensure better grip, especially when there is snow.
However, the appearance of the two types of rims is not quite the same. Here it is clearly the alloy wheels that look the best. However, steel rims are often covered by a hubcap, which can mask the less attractive rims.
The alloy rims on summer tires are often much more prone to damage than the steel rims on your winter tires. That's why it's a good idea to have alloy wheels repaired during the winter months when they're not in use.
